Dr. Alfred Glaess. Al started Rotary in Norfolk, Va., in 1948. He moved to Illinois in 1959, to Iowa in 1954 and to Sulphur Springs in 1966. He was the president of the Sulphur Springs Rotary Club in 1976-77. He was the Governor of District 5830 in 1986-87. Al has been on numerous study groups, youth exchange, and numerous district committees. A graduate of Loyola University, he graduated with an M.D. degree in 1940 at age 23. He served in the military during WWII, stationed at several locations. He has pioneered work in pneumonencephalography, cerebral and cartoid angiography, bi-plane cassette changer, and knee pneumography. In 1956, Al contracted polio, and was confined to an iron lung. He recovered and has been active since. He and wife Kay have six children. Al served on the Board of the American Cancer Society and has hobbies that include raising and breeding American Saddle-bred horses, makes his own wine from his vineyard and a tills a two acre vegetable garden.
