Stories
March is Water and Sanitation Month

Every day is World Water Day with Rotary

At least 3,000 children die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe water, a grim reminder for Rotary members who make providing clean water and sanitation an organizational priority. While very few people die of thirst, millions die from preventable waterborne diseases, providing the impetus for our members to provide toilets and latrines and other clean water initiatives in underdeveloped countries. Members also teach these communities to maintain new infrastructure, and organize educational projects to promote hand-washing and other good hygiene habits.

Though 22 March is recognized as World Water Day, our commitment to these causes is ongoing. In Ghana, Rotary member Samuel Obour spearheads projects to install latrines, washing stations, and toilets across Ghana. In Latin America, youth from Connecticut, USA, lay water pipelines for communities for high altitude villages. Dozens of other water projects await financial support, from water harvesting in Mexico to a well for clean potable water in Egypt. Join us and get involved.

Or meet us in São Paulo on 4 June for our World Water Summit, the seventh time Rotary members have hosted NGOs, nonprofits, businesses, and concerned citizens of the world for learning, networking, and discussion around clean water. In addition to our summit, members regularly host water experts for round table discussions at their clubs. Find a club near you.

In Evanston, Illinois, join local and national experts for Tap Into Lake Michigan, a panel discussion on local perspectives to the global water crisis on 31 March. The event brings together Rotary members and the general public to mingle with influencers and representatives of local water organizations. Register today.

Our commitment to clean water is stronger than ever. We have over 1.2 million members in more than 34,000 clubs in nearly every corner of the world. Learn more about who we are and what we do.

Paris Rotary" Pride Program"
The Rotary Club of Paris United had a very enjoyable program during their meeting on Jan 31st presented by Debb Fleming and her Student Team(s) from Crockett Intermediate School in Paris, TX. “Paris Pride” is a program to increase access to Lamar County's history. The students are researching the history of chosen buildings and will link all our documented building's history with a QR Code attached to the building. They are raising money to purchase brass plaques to put on 6 of the downtown plaza buildings with the name of the building in 1917.

Paris United club members provided a donation of $296 to the program for the addition of brass placque(s) and QR codes to selected downtown historical buildings. Wilbur Smith Rotary Club Service Above Self
Randy Sams Shelter was established as a homeless shelter by the Sams family in memory of their son.  The shelter provides breakfast and dinner, along with separated sleeping areas for men and women.  They also provide limited vocational training, life skills and counseling.  Evening meals are provided by churches and other civic organizations, along with food donations from restaurants and food pantries.  Residents are assigned case managers and are enrolled in 90 day programs of assistance.

Since the establishment of Randy Sams Shelter, in 1996, Wilbur Smith Rotary has been providing an evening meal on the first Monday of each month to clients at the homeless shelter.  They have had a number of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for these many years.  Coordinators have included Jerry Sparks, Josephine Kaylor, Robert Koons and David Vershaw.  The core cadre of volunteers includes Joel Campisi, Josephine Kaylor, Larry Oxford, Tom Sadowski, Jerry Voss and Brian Goesel.  Other club members join in, as their schedule permits.  All of the servers agree that this is rewarding and time well spent.

Longview-Greggton Build Day with Beds of Hope
Beds of Hope is a nonprofit that provides beds to children in the case of Child Protective Services in Gregg, Rusk, Harrison and Upshur counties. The children cannot be placed until they have a bed.

Beds of Hope was one of the recipients of funds raised by the Longview-Greggton club during our October concert fundraiser featuring Amy Grant. The money allowed the group to buy materials to build 40 beds.

During the Build Day, club members helped put together bed frames, prepare the wood pieces for the frames and help get them ready for transport. They also got a chance to work alongside some of the members of the Longview Midtown Rotary Club, who were also there for a service project.

Pictured is PDG John Jetter busy at work.  This was a good project for Rotarians because it provided an opportunity to put some sweat equity into a group they helped financially. It wasn’t one where we needed the entire club’s participation, but those who helped were enthusiastic about the project.
