September is Basic Education and Literacy Month in Rotary. This observance reminds us that one of the most powerful gifts we can offer the world is the ability to read, write, and learn. Education is the foundation of opportunity, and our work in this area has the potential to transform lives and unlock possibilities for generations to come.

As Rotarians, we know service takes many forms. Sometimes, it provides clean water; other times, it awards scholarships or supplies books; often, it shows up in our communities with open hands and willing hearts.
Club Visits
Over the past month, I have had the privilege of visiting several of our outstanding clubs and witnessing the remarkable impact they are making:
  • The Rotary Club of Athens: A distinguished club and recipient of the Club Excellence Award, epitomized by a proud legacy of service in its 98th year. Athens is my home Club, and I was encouraged by their ongoing support for local youth, scholarships, and community development. The spirit of fellowship and the commitment to “Service Above Self” are very much alive in Athens.
  • The Rotary Club of Overton is a smaller club with a big heart. On the day of my visit, I was surprised by a welcome with my name on their local billboard! Overton Rotarians have dedicated themselves to community service for decades, supporting local projects and building strong partnerships with schools and civic leaders. From their annual Kid Fish program to their chili supper, their impact proves that size does not determine significance. Overton is also a distinguished club and recipient of the Club Excellence Award.
  • The Rotary Club of Lindale: With more than 60 years of history, Lindale Rotarians continue to make a difference through enduring programs—sponsoring Boy Scout Troop 351, awarding scholarships to Lindale High School graduates, supporting the Lindale Library, and improving Pool Park for families to enjoy. Their youth leadership efforts, including involvement with RYLA, are truly inspiring. Lindale is also a distinguished club and recipient of the Club Excellence Award
Lindale’s annual Sportsman Dinner is their premier fund-raising event that I encourage everyone to attend: Click her for more information.
Each of these clubs exemplifies Rotary’s values in action. My sincere thanks to the Rotary leaders, members, and friends who warmly welcomed me during these visits.

District Events

Please mark your calendars for our District 5830 Conference in Idabel, Oklahoma on September 13th at The Museum of the Red River. This will be a weekend of fellowship, inspiration, and celebration of our Rotary family. Come ready to connect, share stories, and recharge your passion for service. I look forward to seeing you there and making this a memorable gathering for our district. Please register here: https://rotary5830.org/event/district-5830-conference/

Currently, I am attending the Zone Institute in Columbus, Ohio, alongside DGE Diane Kavanaugh and DGN Sil Coleman-Gomez. These leadership meetings remind us that we are part of something far larger than ourselves—a global movement of ordinary people achieving extraordinary things. We are learning, sharing, and bringing back fresh ideas to strengthen our clubs and communities in District 5830, now and in the years ahead.

As we embrace September’s theme, let us remember that investing in education is investing in peace, opportunity, and a brighter future. Whether tutoring a student, donating a book, or mentoring a young leader, every action matters.

Thank you for being the heartbeat of Rotary in District 5830. Together, we are United for Good.

In Rotary Service,
