May 2018 District Governor’s Newsletter

April was a busy month as we had numerous clubs holding service projects and fundraisers around D5830. I had the pleasure of participating in a skeet shoot in Canton and playing golf with Cedar Creek Lake. I also was able to attend community recognition events in Tyler and Texarkana. I must say it is a blessing to serve as District Governor and witness all the good being done here in D5830. We also held our District Assembly near Pittsburg. We had just under a 90 Rotarians come to receive training and prepare for the upcoming year as club leaders. It was great to share ideas, discuss the ins and outs of Rotary, and fellowship with one another. Congratulations to DGE Judy Guthrie on a fine event! Thank you to all who attended and the Pittsburg RC for hosting!

The Membership Contest is in full swing and so far, Texarkana International, Tyler, and Henderson clubs hold slim leads. I encourage every club to really emphasize reaching out and inviting prospective members to your clubs!

The number one reason people do not join Rotary is because no one asks them. Identify some one you know who has a heart for service and offer to buy their lunch (or breakfast!). We will have six winners- three for Net Increase April 1st to June 30th and three for Percentage increase from April 1st to June 30th. Each of these six clubs will receive $200. The two overall winning clubs will also have their club meal payed for by the DG!

May is Youth Service month. I would like to congratulate the winners from the District 5830 4 Way Speech Contest- Caleb Snow- Texas High School (Wilbur Smith RC) and Benjamin Huegal- Longview High School (Longview RC) tied for First Place. Caleb and Benjamin each received $1000. Melody Shannon- Paris High School (Paris United RC) was Third Place and received $500. There were 18 participants who all did an outstanding job. The Mt. Pleasant RC and President Sandra Pirkey did a fabulous job hosting the event. We really appreciate their hospitality!

I want to ask each club and Rotarian to review your annual giving to the Foundation Annual Fund. Most clubs make their gifts near the end of the Rotary year. Please make sure this is on your agenda and try to get your gifts sent in prior to June 15th. The money you give this year will come back as District Designated Funds in 2020-2021. These are the funds clubs apply for Club Project Grants. D5830 also uses a portion of these funds for International Service like what we are doing down in Guatemala and Honduras. Our D5830 goal is to exceed $100 per capita to the Foundation AF!

The 2018 D5830 District Conference will be held October 19th and 20th in Longview, Texas at the new Holiday Inn Express Infinity Event Center. This will be a great opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of clubs, individuals, and our district. There will be fun, food, entertainment, and fellowship. YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT! Attached is the flyer for the event and also found on the District 5830 Document files. I encourage every D5830 club to purchase a program advertisement and recognize the good work your club is doing! It would also be a great opportunity for Rotarian businesses to advertise among their fellow Rotarians. All advertising funds will help defer the event costs and keep ticket prices to a minimum! All advertisers will receive multiple recognitions at the conference.

Club Project Grant Applications are due May 15th! Please get these sent in on time. This is you club’s money! Applications can be sent to DFC PDG Carroll Greenwaldt or Club Grant Sub Chair James Roberts.

Tyler Sunrise RC will celebrate their 30th anniversary in late May. Congratulations!

The Installation for incoming DG, Judy Guthrie, will be June 16th at the Carthage Country Club. This will be a brunch from 10-1. Please come and help Judy celebrate!
