Jo Ann Parkman of the Paris United  Rotary Club was Governor of District 5830 for the years 2001-2002. Jo Ann has had an active role in District 5830 for a number of years. She is past president of the Paris Rotary Club and has held chairman-ships on several civic service boards including St. Joseph's Hospital of Paris. 

Jo Ann lives in Paris, Texas and has three sons, seven grandchildren, and a dog Honey. She is an active member of the Oak Park United Methodist Church, where Jo Ann is the Lay Delegate to the their Annual Conference. She is also Chairman of the Board of the St. Joseph's Hospital & Health Center, as well as President of the NetseO Trails Boy Scouts of America Council. Jo Ann retired from TU Electric November 1997. Her career spanned 30 years, starting as a Home Service Advisor, and ending as District Manager. She has been a Rotarian since 1988 when she joined the Rotary Club of Grapevine and eventually became a director. She is now a member of the Rotary Club of Paris where she was chosen as their first female president in 1997. She went to The International Convention in Glasgow, and was named one of the outstanding presidents of 1996-97.

Rotary district wins membership award

A jeweled globe sits inside a showcase in Jo Ann Parkman's living room - a reminder of the international scope of the service organization she represents.

Rotary District 5830 governor for 2001-2002, Parkman returned to Paris last week from the Rotary International Convention in Barcelona, Spain, with the globe that she said a year earlier she could only dream of possessing.

"When I learned that 50 governors would receive the beautiful globe for their district's membership recruitment, I thought to myself there would be no way," Parkman said.

The international group established goals for the 530 district governors, the primary goal being member growth with Rotary's Global Quest as the focus. The theme for the year was Mankind is Our Business.

A donation to the Rotary Foundation from two past district governors paved the way for District 5830 to be one of the top membership recruitment groups out of the 530 districts in the world.

Former district governors Jim Fitzgerald of Marshall and Charlie Whiteside of Kilgore made the donation.

"With this generous gift out there, our district members worked hard to get new members," she said. "This beautiful globe stands as a reminder of the hard work and dedication of the members of our district."

District 5830 is made up of 44 Rotary clubs in Northeast Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Rotary International is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs.

The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world.

Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy and violence.

During Parkman's term as governor, her district purchased 262 wheelchairs in conjunction with the Wheelchair Foundation of California.

She and her husband Charlie Parkman, also a Rotarian, along with past District Governor James B. Thompson of Mineola, traveled to Merida, Yucatan, Mexico in early June to visit the three facilities that received the chairs.

"That's what Rotary is all about," Parkman said.
