October is a month full of meaning for Rotary. It is officially recognized as Economic and Community Development Month, a time when we reflect on how our projects help grow stronger local economies and create opportunities for families and communities.

But October also gives us a special global moment: World Polio Day on October 24. District 5830 joins Rotarians everywhere in reaffirming our promise to the world: to End Polio Now.

Thanks to your steadfast support, we are closer than ever to eradicating this disease, but the work is not done. This is our chance to highlight Rotary’s impact and raise awareness and funds to finish the fight.
September Club Visits Recap
September was a wonderful month of fellowship and inspiration as I traveled across our district to visit clubs. Each one is doing incredible work:
  • Tyler Food Bank Rotary (Sept 8) – An inspiring club meeting at the East Texas Food Bank, blending Rotary service with a mission to fight hunger in our region.
  • Longview Rotary (Sept 9) – A dynamic group whose long history of leadership continues to shine brightly in Gregg County.
  • Longview Greggton Rotary (Sept 12) – A club filled with energy and heart for service, making a difference in their community through hands-on projects.
  • Gladewater Rotary (Sept 18) – Small but mighty, this club is deeply engaged in strengthening its town with impactful programs.
  • Mt. Vernon Rotary (Sept 20) – A highlight of the month was their Denim and Diamonds Fundraiser at the stunning A&W Orchard Event Center. Thanks to Dr. Nayyar T. Syed and all sponsors, this event was a record-breaking success for the club and the community it serves.
  • Jacksonville Rotary (Sept 24) – I had the honor of joining fellow Rotarians, including State Senator Robert Nichols, as an active member of this vibrant club.
Spotlight on Future Leaders – UT Tyler Rotaract
I am thrilled to share the news of the addition of the Rotaract Club at the University of Texas at Tyler. This new club will bring dozens of young leaders into District 5830, strengthening our Rotary family and expanding our reach.

Rotaract provides incredible opportunities: it empowers students and young professionals to develop leadership skills, engage in meaningful service, and connect with Rotarians and peers worldwide. By investing in Rotaract, we are ensuring that the spirit of Rotary remains vibrant for generations to come.

A special thanks goes to Greg LaMay of the Rotary Club of Tyler Food Bank, our District Rotaract Chairman Dr. Brian Matthews, and the dedicated committee who worked diligently to make this vision a reality. Their leadership and commitment remind us that when we mentor and empower future leaders, we multiply the impact of Rotary.

Call to Action – End Polio Now
As we approach World Polio Day on October 24, clubs across District 5830 are leading the charge with creative and impactful events:
South Tyler Rotary – “Pints for Polio .5K” | October 18
Rotary Club of Athens – “Pickleball for Polio” at Hollytree Country Club, Tyler | October 25

These events highlight the passion and ingenuity of our clubs as we raise awareness and funds to eradicate polio. I encourage you to support them — and keep an eye on our District Calendar for more meaningful opportunities as we continue to pull for eradication across District 5830 and the Rotary world.  And remember — every dollar given to PolioPlus is matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation. Together, we can finish the fight.

Closing Thought
From economic development at home to polio eradication across the globe, Rotary continues to prove that when we come together, we are United for Good.

Thank you for your service, your generosity, and your commitment to making lasting change.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Damon G. Donnell
District Governor 2025–2026
